APRIL 22 – Prince tribute

I am still stunned that Prince died yesterday. He created the soundtrack of my childhood, teen years and adulthood. I am so lucky to have had such a talented musician grow musically over the years as I grew up literally. But I am so unlucky that nearly all of the entertainment icons I know of are dying early of health issues, overdoses and suicide but sadly not of old age.

I have had the privilege of seeing many of his shows from NY to Cali both public and private shows, from amphitheaters to tiny clubs and even attended one of his infamous after parties at his home in LA. I am thankful that Prince created such a wealth of music from r&b to rock to funk, house and rap. If you are just discovering his music know that only about 50% of his released material is available digitally. He staunchly refused to make mp3s available of the majority of his work. Maybe only 15% of his music has ever been released. If you were fan like me, you signed up for his various forays into limited distribution over the years. And if you were a serious collector, you hunted down his many bootlegs of unreleased songs and recordings of his live shows which always included alternate or extended versions of a few songs.
Prince’s music was fantastic but his live shows were phenomenol. He and his super talented band members, which varied over the years always added something extra to each set making his shows a must-see for any fan of live music.
There is so much more I could say about this legendary man but I would rather play the music that made him legendary. This set will be filled with less commercial songs, bootlegs and live performances. We lost a tremendous icon yesterday but he left us a musical legacy to build upon.
Rest in Power, Prince.
